The Death Of Abraham Lincoln - 1396 Words

Abraham Lincoln describes himself, â€Å"I am now the most miserable man living. If what I feel were equally distributed to the whole human family, there would not be one cheerful face on the earth. Whether I shall ever be better I can not tell; I awfully forebode I shall not. To remain as I am impossible; I must die or be better, it appears to me.† It does not take a psychiatrist or a person with a PhD to realize these are the words of a very depressed man. Friends and relatives close to Abraham Lincoln through the course of his life all have a common factor, that is, that they all knew that Abraham Lincoln was a deeply troubled man. Not only was depression a constant companion to Lincoln; moreover, he wore depression outwardly like a full†¦show more content†¦E. There has never been a manic episode or a hypomanic episode.† Lincoln would have most certainly been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder if he lived in the modern era where we have made unbounded advancements in medicine and treatments. Medicine was just not quite mature enough in the mid-1800’s though; medicine still had to go through the obnoxious and rebellious teenage years before it could blossom into the educated adult it is today. Yet, medicine still has not reached its peak and wise older years of sitting in a rocking chair on the porch amid a warm summers day reflecting on its life. Medicine still had much room to grow in regards to mental illness and how to treat it but it has made headway since Lincoln’s era. Lincoln was aware of his depressive state. In January of 1841, Lincoln admitted himself to Dr. Anson Henry, who he proclaimed, â€Å"necessary to my existence.† Lincoln spent several hours a day with Dr. Henry. Little is known to how Dr. Henry treated Lincoln but a prominent doctor of modern day medicine concluded it was more than likely, â€Å"the desolating tortures of officious medication.† In the late 80’s, early 90†™s, a group of scholars reopened the Lincoln case and started to analyze him in a more modern day approach. The historians of this group were, Douglas Wilson, Rodney Davis, Michael Burlingame, and Allen Guelzo.
